Granby public safety building work set to start

GRANBY - Construction of the $6.4 million combined police and fire station on Kellogg Field will start this spring.
James Trompke, chairman of the Public Safety Building Committee, said Fontaine Bros., of Springfield, has been hired to serve as the construction manager for the project.
Fontaine is now working with the project’s architect Kaestle Boos Associates to tweak the building’s design for what Trompke called “value engineering.” The move is to make sure the project can be done within budget, he said.
“The idea is to be complete and out to bid next month,” Trompke said.
“It’s a good environment to be seeking bids.”
A request for bids for the foundation and site work will be issued first, with other subcontracting bids following a week or two later, said Trompke.
Crews can be expected to break ground on the 11-acre site at the corner of State Street and North Street by the beginning of May, he said.
The committee has received permission from the state to use a process called cost management at risk. It allows construction to begin before the design and engineering is completed and it becomes the construction management company’s responsibility to bring the project in on budget, Trompke said.
The potential for major design changes during construction is minimized by the construction management company working closely with the architect, Trompke said.

Fontaine Brothers Chosen for Granby Public Safety Complex

The Granby Public Safety Complex committee has chosen Fontaine Brothers of Springfield as the Construction Manager for the project. The projects bid process received 12 solicitations from builders in Western and Eastern Massachusetts, Connecticut and New Hampshire. Through a scoring process five companies were pre-qualified to provide proposals on the project. Those were then ranked separately on technical merit and pricing. The combined scores determined the selected firm.

Fontaine Brothers scored the highest on technical merit and was the lowest price. Together as highest score and lowest price Fontaine Brothers was selected as the Construction Manager that would best meet Granbys needs.

Fontaine Brothers, a local builder since 1933, has constructed numerous schools in the area but more specifically Police and Fire Complex’s in East Longmeadow, Holyoke, Easthampton and Great Barrington. They bring years of experience to the project.
